Anabelle and I have been friends since childhood. We recently returned to London to retire after living a long time in the colonies. Both of us are excessively fond of tea. Some would consider our habits snobby. You will be hard pressed to find a tea bag in our pantry. We tend to spend outrageous amounts on single estate tea leaves. Like with anything, once you taste the good stuff you can't go back.
Our favourite tea ritual, aside from having tea in bed every morning, is afternoon tea. It's surprisingly difficult to find an appropriately priced, well presented afternoon tea in London. I realize we are particular but after spending a fortune on afternoon tea shouldn't one be treated to a better sight on the bottom of the teapot than a pitiful shrivelled bag of Tesco-bought Twinnings? So we set out on a quest to find the perfect afternoon tea in London. The content of all three tiered plates must match in quality the beverage that – according to a poster in a well-known Parisian salon de thé – revives the world. We like to take our tea in a relaxed, unhurried, stylish atmosphere. We don't care for muzac piped into every inch of the establishment, or any other Mothers Day embellishments. Nor do we expect cute tea cozies or rustic checkered table cloths. Leave that for the Isle of Wight. We're in London after all.
If you have a recommendation, we'd love to hear from you.
